Eco “square” stands for “economical” and “eco-friendly”. According to Samsung, Eco2 increases light transmittance by 33 percent. This allows the screen to be brighter while consuming 25 percent less power. This is the “economical” part of the technology. The new display assembly also reduces the use of plastic as it gets rid of the polarizer layer. This makes it ” eco-friendly”.

OLED displays have traditionally featured a polarizer layer that helps in reflecting incoming light and improving visibility. But the very nature of this layer also blocks the light coming out from the display. As a result, it reduces screen brightness by up to 50 percent. Samsung has solved this problem with the Eco2 display technology. It has multiple benefits — higher screen brightness, lower power consumption, thinner and lighter display assembly, and lesser use of plastic. The new display assembly debuted on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 last year. According to Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), Samsung may now use the Eco2 technology on the Galaxy Z Flip 4 this year. This would allow the company to make the clamshell foldable thinner and lighter while also increasing the battery life. Perhaps this helps in cost reduction too. Recent reports suggest the 2022 Samsung foldables could come cheaper than their predecessors. The $1,000 entry price of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 last year was quite affordable for foldables. So any price cut on that would be welcome. The Galaxy Z Fold 3, on the other hand, was still quite expensive at $1,800. It’d be nice if the Korean behemoth can sell its successor at under $1,500 this year. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 are expected to launch in the second half of this year. Along with the new display technology for the former, Samsung is also said to be planning several other upgrades for the two foldables. A flagship-grade camera setup could be one of the primary upgrades. With a few more months still to go, there’s a lot of time for more Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 leaks. We will keep you posted.
