Exynos W920 specifications & features

The Exynos W920 is the industry’s first 5nm wearable processor. Built with an advanced extreme ultra-violet (EUV) process node, Samsung promises improved performance as well as power efficiency with the new chip. It features two ARM Cortex-A55 CPU cores and an ARM Mali-G68 GPU. According to the company, this chipset brings about a 20 percent CPU performance boost over its predecessor. Graphics performance is said to be no less than “ten times better.” All these improvements mean the new processor enables faster app launches in wearable devices. Samsung says it enables a more interactive eye-catching 3D graphical user interface (GUI) as well. This chipset supports screens of up to qHD resolution (960 x 540 pixels). Samsung has also included a dedicated low-power display processor, the Cortex-M55, for the always-on-display (AOD) functionality. It reduces display power consumption when AOD is turned on. The Exynos W920 features an integrated 4G LTE modem. It also gets a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 to keep track of your distance, speed, and location during outdoor activities. Samsung says the chipset supports the new unified wearable platform that it has co-developed with Google, i.e. Wear OS 3. Despite all the enhancements, the Exynos W920 comes in the industry’s smallest package for wearables to date with Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging (FO-PLP). It includes the main processor, power management chip, LPDDR4 RAM, and eMMC storage in the same package. This allows for more space inside the devices that OEMs can use to include larger batteries. “Wearables like smartwatches are no longer just a cool gadget to have. They’re now a growing part of our lifestyles to keep you fit, safe and alert,” said Harry Cho, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung. “With the Exynos W920, future wearables will be able to run applications with visually appealing user interfaces and more responsive user experiences while keeping you connected on the go with fast LTE.”
