Samsung throttles its phones without doing any gaming

Thermal throttling is what causes your phone to start lagging during a long session of Genshin Impact. All companies do this, and some do this more than others. It all depends on how optimized the phone’s software is for gaming along with the RAM and processor. According to SamMobile, multiple people were able to discover something interesting about how Samsung throttles its phones’ gaming performance. A Korean YouTuber was able to trick a Galaxy phone into thinking one app was a game. He ran the phone through the benchmark app Geekbench and recorded its scores. Then, he found a way to rename the app to Genshin Impact. The app was the same, but it just had a different name. However, when he ran the benchmark again, he got a significant dip in scores; as much as 50%. This means that Samsung throttles its phones’ gaming performance automatically when it thinks that the app is a game. That’s really weird because we’re used to phones dropping in performance due to temperature. In Samsung’s case, it drops before the game even boots up. This is because of the company’s Games Optimization Service (GOS). The GOS manages the game’s performance and decides when it throttles.

While it seems like a conscious decision on Samsung’s part, the company has acknowledged this and addressed it as an issue. Something definitely needs to be done because this isn’t only impacting the Galaxy S22 phones. A person actually tested this on older Galaxy Phones like the Galaxy S10, and the same thing happened to that phone. It seems that Samsung is throttling newer phones more than older ones. Newer phones have a bigger gap in performance than older phones which didn’t show much difference. According to Naver, Samsung should be making an official statement soon. Hopefully, the company can shed some light on this and fix the problem.
