Deep down, we all knew that this was bound to happen. Being forced to stay inside led many people to look for devices to help them pass the time. Cause and effect: the tablet market saw a bit of a boost. However, now that the pandemic is on the decline, so are tablet sales. We’ve been following the meteoric fall of the tablet market over the past two years, and it doesn’t seem to be changing.

The tablet market is on the decline for the fifth quarter in a row
Tablets have been struggling to maintain their spot between smartphones and computers over the past several years, so the fact that they’re struggling now should be no surprise. According to Canalys, the tablet market has not seen any growth for the fifth quarter in a row. Its highest quarter in years was during Q1 of 2021. There were north of 50 million tablets shipped, and that meant a 50% year-over-year increase. However, in Q3 of 2022, we saw a 6% decline compared to Q3 of 2021. This brings the total number of units shipped down to 35.3 million. Not only is the tablet market shrinking because of less demand, but also because of the persisting supply chain issues and the worsening economy. It is a perfect storm of bad scenarios that’s causing, not only the tablet market, but the Chromebook and smartphone markets to struggle. These conditions may go on for the next several years, unfortunately. However, there is some slightly good news for the tablet market. Though the tablet market is seeing a drop, it’s still slightly higher than the lowest pre-pandemic numbers. Back in 2019, there were around 25 million units shipped worldwide. That was the lowest quarter in recent history. Also, though this may not be much, Q3 2022 saw a 1% increase in shipments compared to Q2 2022. We’re not sure how long this is going to keep going, but it’s still nice to know that companies are still shipping tablets.
