The social media giant spoke about the change in its blog post (via). “When we receive a report that a Tweet contains unauthorized private media, we will now take action in line with our range of enforcement options,” Twitter said. The move comes as several individuals face frequent harassment and bullying on the platform, propagated mainly by anonymous accounts. Twitter notes it will glean the context before responding to a complaint. For starters, Twitter won’t take down content which it deems to be in the public interest. So this move is unlikely to affect public figures since they come under the public domain. Twitter notes that it would remove pictures/videos circulated to “harass, intimidate, or use fear to silence” public figures.

Moreover, Twitter clarifies that not everybody can file a complaint about media on the platform. “When private information or media has been shared on Twitter, we need a first-person report or a report from an authorized representative in order to make the determination that the image or video has been shared without their permission.” This comes days after a significant executive change at Twitter, with Parag Agrawal taking over as CEO from Jack Dorsey. “I’ve decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders,” Dorsey said in a statement. Additionally, Bret Taylor is taking over as the Independent Board Chair of Twitter from Patrick Pichette. Taylor serves as the President and COO of Salesforce. Meanwhile, Pichette will remain on the board and serve as chair of the Audit Committee. Twitter has been under fire over the past few years over controversial policies. The platform hopes to turn a page with Agrawal at the helm. But only time will tell if he can help the company bring about significant changes. Twitter is currently stepping into the online shopping business. It recently partnered with Walmart for a “Livestream Shopping” event on the site.
